Saint Paul Miki and Companions

Nagasaki, Japan, is familiar to Americans as the city on which the second atomic bomb was dropped, immediately killing over 37,000 people. Three and a half centuries before, 26 martyrs of Japan were crucified on a hill, now known as the Holy Mountain, overlooking Nagasaki. Among them were priests, brothers, and laymen, Franciscans, Jesuits, and members of the Secular Franciscan Order; there were catechists, doctors, simple artisans, and servants, old men and innocent children—all united in a common faith and love for Jesus and his Church. Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit and a native of Japan, has become the best known among the martyrs of Japan.

Our Lady of Lourdes

Our Lady of Lourdes dates back to 19th century France, in the city of Lourdes, when the Virgin Mary appeared to a young woman named Bernadette in February 1858 (just four years after the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception). Our Lady of Lourdes is the patron saint of the sick, and countless people have turned to her over the past two centuries, asking for her intercession to heal them.
The season of Lent is upon us. It begins on February 18, Ash Wednesday, a reminder of the need for Repentance. Masses will be held in church at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm.
We have lined up activities for parishioners to participate in throughout the season, including Fridays of Lent on February 20, February 27, March 6, March 13, March 20, and March 27 (Living Stations of the Cross). The schedule of activities on Fridays of Lent are:
- 6:00 pm SOUP in the Parish Hall
- 6:30 pm SCRIPTURE READING by Clergy
- 7:00 pm STATIONS OF THE CROSS in the Church
On February 28, Saturday, we are also holding a Day of Recollection, with Adoration and Reconciliation Service, led by Fr. Emmanuel Gutierrez from

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENT
On February 6, First Friday, we will have the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus after the 8:30 am Mass and Rosary at the chapel. This will be led by the Legion of Mary.
On February 7, First Saturday, join us for the Mass at 8:30 am at the Chapel, followed by Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Update from COR
We will continue discussing spiritual warfare. In particular, we will examine sacramentals and the sacraments. These are powerful weapons we can use in the battle against the devil and evil. We’ll begin with a video from EWTN and maybe learn how we can resist evil and move our lives closer to God. The first of these sessions proved to be lively and beneficial to the men of Cor.
What will life be like at the end of time? Will there be life? Why do we fast? Saints to learn more about include Clement, Ignatius of Antioch, and Theresa of Avila. We choose the subjects that are important to us as long as they relate to prayer, spiritual formation, or fraternity. What subject will get YOU to try Cor? We meet most Mondays in the parish center at 7:00 pm.

The Order of Malta San Francisco Region and Shrine of St. Jude are hosting the World Day of the Sick Mass and Anointing of the Sick. This year, we are collaborating with St. Jude Shrine, and World Day of the Sick will be part of the Lourdes Novena organized by the Shrine from February 3–11.
Prayer cards for your intentions will be available during the Mass, and members of the Order of Malta take the cards to Lourdes, France, during their annual pilgrimage at the beginning of May. A reception follows the Mass.

The Chinese Ministry warmly invites you to celebrate the Lunar New Year! The Most Reverend Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone will preside at the liturgy. All priests and deacons of the Archdiocese are invited to participate in this joyful celebration. Any priest or deacon who would like to concelebrate the Mass is kindly asked to directly contact Fr. Following the Mass, a Lunar New Year Banquet will be held in the Patrons’ Hall, beginning at 5:00p. Tables and individual tickets are available for sponsorship and purchase. Tickets are $80 per person, and parishes are especially invited to sponsor tables in support of the Chinese Ministry.
